The Role of YMCA Volunteers

Volunteers have always been the cornerstone of the successful YMCA movement. Such is the legacy of George Williams, the civic volunteer who founded the YMCA in 1844. He shared his vision with others; and their collective efforts enabled the YMCA to grow for thirteen years until the first position of "corresponding secretary" was filled.

Why should you volunteer?

Become a YMCA volunteer because it is fun, it provides a great sense of belonging, and because volunteering makes a positive difference in the lives of others. You will become an important part of our leadership tradition by volunteering at the Okmulgee County Family YMCA.

What types of volunteers are at the YMCA?

  • Policy volunteers - People who serve on YMCA boards and committees
  • Fund-raising volunteers - People who serve in our annual campaign and other fundraising events
  • Program volunteers - People who have direct contact with YMCA members and people in the community. They help the YMCA deliver programs and services. They may also help in the office, the facility and on the grounds.
